THE ORIGIN OF THE BAPHOMET

The image of Baphomet is one that is probably familiar to all, yet those who know the meaning of its symbols are fewer; and those who know its exact origin are non-existent. However, some of the earliest history of the Baphomet is with the Knights Templar, as its mention was brought to prominance during their trials with the inquisition. The Knights Templar was the first military order of the Christian church. They were formed after the first crusade primarily to provide protection for new pilgrims to Jerusalem…..As the crusades wore on in futility, dissension began to arise between several factions of the Christian church. To make a long story short, the Templars, being the losers of the popularity contest, came to be brought to trial for, Guess What?…..’heresy’. During these trials, there were several accusations, and then forced confessions, claiming that the Templars were involved in idolatry with this half-goat, half-human entity. Getting tried for heresy by the Christian church usually didn’t turn out to well for the accused, no matter who they were. And, typical of the modus operandi of Christianity all throughout history, the accused Templars, the former military servants of the church were hanged, be-headed, or burned alive.
Visual representation of the Baphomet would not surface until some years later, courtesy of 19th century occultist, Eliphas Levi. Levi’s drawing, entitled, ‘The Sabbatical Goat’ has become a familiar image world over, and often, its meaning has been misconstrued to represent the devil. In a sense, the association isn’t terribly unjustified, as the image of the Baphomet symbolizes unhindered knowledge, knowledge w/o limits, forbidden knowledge. Later, Levi would take the pentagram, which is the first religious symbol known to man, and combine it with the image of the ram, or goat’s head. This symbol became even more embedded in the psyche of the world as an indication of Devil worship when the image copyright, which was never acquired by the artist, was purchased by the Church Of Satan.
The pentagram, with it’s five points, represents, in it’s simplest interpretation, the five elements- Earth, Air, Fire Water, and Ether, with the one point (Ether) facing upward. To some, the five-pointed star is in the ideal this way, with ether, or ‘spirit’ facing the Heavens, the ‘highest’ ideal. Jesus makes references to the goat when he states, “At my right hand are the sheep, and on the left, the goats.” Sheep are followers, they need to be herded. The Goat, conversely, is meant to represent an animal of independence. The fire burning above Baphomet’s head represents the quest for unlimited knowledge, and the image of Baphomet, with the pentagram inverted, shows the three tips pointing downward, representing for Satanists a rejection of the Holy Trinity, while its horns are thrust upward, in defiance of Heaven.
